USB uses 5V and can provide 2.5W (USB2) or 4.5W (USB3). 802.11af uses 44V and can provide 15.4W. Things like Access Points will want the higher power levels of PoE. Also for longer cable runs you would need thicker wires to carry the higher current used by USB so Cat5e cable may not be suitable.

The advantage that USB power has is that it's cheaper to implement in the device. That saving would probably be outweighed by the additional cost of running the cable to power it.Mr Humbughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00505323917905159255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-91605698533471229452013-08-21T10:04:27.956+01:002013-08-21T10:04:27.956+01:00The argument is that for a networking device you&#...The argument is that for a networking device you're already running the networking cable, so even usb is extra so what's there already

The only argument I can think of where USB power is preferable to PoE is when your device is 802.11 only, surely?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-72899821924048506272013-08-20T16:29:34.834+01:002013-08-20T16:29:34.834+01:00Yeh, wired whole house when I moved in with Cat5 a...Yeh, wired whole house when I moved in with Cat5 and sat/TV cabling...RevKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12369263214193333422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-61354038210254393412013-08-20T16:28:10.087+01:002013-08-20T16:28:10.087+01:00Best Guess is it's a satellite/cable connectio...Best Guess is it's a satellite/cable connection for a TV Dragonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00022860954210501938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-75174850058791417222013-08-20T16:21:53.699+01:002013-08-20T16:21:53.699+01:00We've got an Atlas monitoring device from RIPE...We've got an Atlas monitoring device from RIPE which takes its power over USB: ideal as our router has a USB socket... Yes, it's two sockets needed (one for ethernet one for USB), but with USB being such as "standard" would it be more beneficial for routers/devices to use that for power instead of PoE?Richy Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11328244621821820978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-48090198982578966572013-08-20T15:53:24.136+01:002013-08-20T15:53:24.136+01:00What is F32?What is F32?Fawksiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17210436908486965419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-17655015584954530042013-08-20T15:34:38.862+01:002013-08-20T15:34:38.862+01:00The only problem with those little POE switches is...The only problem with those little POE switches is they often have a fairly low total power budget, So don't expect to be able to pull the full 802.3af limit on each port.Dragonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00022860954210501938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3993498847203183398.post-81932467700476797662013-08-20T15:34:21.784+01:002013-08-20T15:34:21.784+01:00I actually bought the D-Link switch purely as an &...I actually bought the D-Link switch purely as an "experimental" purchase and am very happy with it.
