OK, what makes me cringe is when a certain person says something like "On a scale of 1 to 10... it was a really good idea". i.e. never actually places the rating of something on the scale of 1 to 10, just prefixes an opinion unnecessarily with "On a scale of 1 to 10", Arrrg.

The one I "love" is being asked to rate potential hires on a scale of 1 to 10; the end decision is always "make an offer/don't make an offer", and all that putting my opinion in a "1 to 10" scale does is create arguments, as I'm thinking in "hire this guy", or "don't hire this guy" terms.

On a scale of One to Ten
Even XKCD get's it wrong sometimes.
Indeed, "ten" is a quantity, which may be written in many ways. 10b is not "ten", it is "two". Such jokes only work when written, which is, of course, what xkcd have done here even if written as a "quote".
